- years of experience, and said he didn't get caught until he was 22, maybe 23!
Pop veteran Robbie Williams has offered under-fire supergroup One Direction some cheeky advice after Louis and Zayn were caught appearing to smoke cannabis on video – “Don’t get caught”.
The singer, 40, gave his “showbiz brothers” the benefit of his experience – and let’s face it, he has plenty of it – ahead of this weekend’s Soccer Aid at Old Trafford.
No stranger to a spot of bother in his own career, Rob said of the lads’ embarrassing video after it emerged online: “I think they should stop getting caught! Drop a shoulder, give them a dummy, but just don’t get caught. I didn’t get caught until I was at least 22 – maybe 23!”
And he wisely suggested that young pop stars, including Justin Bieber, who last weekend caused outrage after he was filmed using the n-word, should stop making home videos. Smart advice that, Rob – although it would be smarter still not to say it in the first place.
US R&B star Usher had more to say to Justin last night – saying he had been naive but “he is unequivocally not a racist”.
The 35-year-old, who has been a mentor to the singer, posted his support and a picture online adding he had watched him grow up negotiating “difficult waters”.
Meanwhile Robbie, who is soon to be a dad for the second time with wife Ayda, has been unable to play in today’s Unicef Soccer Aid, which he’s organised every two years since 2006. He explained he has a back injury and is in the middle of a world tour. “I couldn’t walk last night, I had to get a physio to the house. I want to join in but I can’t - the tour will resume the second Soccer Aid finishes and I have to look after myself.”
Instead he has taken on the role of coach, alongside manager Sam Allardyce, and revealed he introduced an unusual team bonding ritual – spooning. Whatever works...
Now that he’s not going to be joining stars such as John Bishop, Olly Murs, Michael Sheen and James McAvoy on the pitch, silky-skilled Rob has revealed he is gutted he won’t be able to “show off” to the crowds. But he said: “I will think of something!” I bet, Rob.
